Rogues' Memories - Adventures with Rex Wotton.
Not often does one run across authentic adventurers who have a fearless spirit of adventure and an endearing sense of fun. This was Rex Wotton, a sailor, climber, scuba diver, and a great sport. With his parents, Les and Muriel, Rex Wotton ran the West Coast Watersports shop at Coral Reef hotel. It was just a short walk from Settlers Beach. They took hotel guest diving and on daytime and sunset cruises along the coast. He was an expert seaman trained by the Royal Merchant Navy in ship navigation, and marine work. Rex Wotton was among the most charming Rogues in Paradise. He had an infectious sense of fun and used it to win over every situation. He was independent at an early age and often took off for days at a time, to camp by Joes' river , catching cray fish for lunch. He built campfires from coconut husk and twigs and cooked his catch with breadfruit, wild herbs, plantain, and edible vines. He ate mangoes, and local berries like fat pork, and sea grapes, that grow along the beach.
As a child, he had a habit of disappearing into the woods: Taking off with simply the basic necessaries, trousers, t-shirt, sneakers, knife, a Wide rim hat, and little else, he lived off the land: He sheltered among trees, caves, and rocks, which he covered with bush and debris, making a roof with palms and banana leaves. Banana leaves have many uses. Wrapped around food, they serve as a container for cooking over a fire. They make an excellent surface to serve up a meal, and can be used as a shade and a cover on which to lie down.
